179.04 MEDICAL ATTENDANCE FOR PRISONERS.
   Whenever any prisoner in the City jail is sick or injured, the keeper of the City jail or the officer to whose custody such prisoner is committed shall notify such physician or surgeon as Council shall designate. It shall be the duty of such physician or surgeon to visit such prisoner and furnish him proper medicine and medical attention. The cost of the medicine furnished shall be charged against the prisoner and he shall pay for the same either in money or by work at the same rate required for the payment of fines and costs, and he shall not be entitled to a discharge until he shall have paid for his medicine as herein provided.
