The Mayor, as Director of Public Safety, may appointment and commission at his discretion, upon the recommendation of the Police Chief, a special part-time police officer to be known as an Animal Control Officer who shall have police power necessary, including citation power, to investigate and assist in the enforcement of all State statutes and Village ordinances relating to animals. The Animal Control Officer shall be sworn as a special officer and shall have all the rights, privileges and immunities and obligations extended to regular members of the Village Police Department subject to the limitations specified in this chapter. Any person so appointed shall carry a valid State of Ohio Division of Wildlife permit for nuisance animals. (Ord. 101-1997. Passed 12-1-97.)
The powers herein granted to the Animal Control Officer and the rights, privileges and immunities further granted apply only as long as the officer is employed by the Village in the capacity of Animal Control Officer. The officer, while engaged in the capacity of an Animal Control Officer shall carry upon his person a badge, along with other credentials to be furnished by the Police Chief, which credentials shall specify the police powers for animal control enforcement. The officer shall not be allowed to carry a revolver, rifle or other firearm, but may carry special equipment pertaining to the performance of his duties. Any personal equipment or vehicle furnished by the Animal Control Officer shall be insured and maintained by the officer. Vehicle insurance shall be maintained at the limits prescribed by the Mayor.
