All awnings installed and in place and in use and operation on September 30, 1958, and all canopies installed and in place and in use and operation on September 23, 1954, may be continued; provided, however, that should the owner of the business at which such awnings or canopies are located either vacate the premises or discontinue business, such awnings or canopies shall be removed therefrom and his or her permit for such installation revoked if the awning or canopy does not comply with the requirements of this chapter.
