6-1-3: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ORIGINAL APPOINTMENT:
   A.   The following requirements shall be met by all persons seeking to take the examination for original appointment by the Village Board of Public Safety Commissioners as a public safety officer of the Department of Public Safety:
      1.   The person must be a citizen of the United States of America and must have been a citizen for not less than one year prior to the first date on the last day for filing an application to take the examination; and
      2.   The person must be at least twenty (20) years old and not more than thirty five (35) years old on the first date on which the examination is to be given; provided, that:
         a.   Persons under the age of twenty one (21) years of age will not be eligible to be sworn in as a public safety officer until after they are twenty one (21) years old.
         b.   A person who is more than thirty five (35) years old but less than forty (40) years old shall be eligible to take the examination for original appointment if the person on the first date of the examination is employed by the Village as an auxiliary public safety officer with at least five (5) years of continuous service prior to the first date of the examination.
         c.   A person who is more than thirty five (35) years old shall be eligible to take the examination for original appointment if the person has previously been employed as a police officer or firefighter in a regularly constituted police or fire department; and
      3.   The person must, on the last day for filing an application to take the examination, either:
         a.   (1)   Be a high school graduate or have passed a high school graduation equivalency test;
            (2)   Be currently employed by the Village as an auxiliary public safety officer;
            (3)   Have been employed as an auxiliary public safety officer for not less than two (2) continuous years; and
            (4)   Have worked at least two hundred fifty (250) hours as an auxiliary public safety officer; or
         b.   (1)   Be a high school graduate or have passed a high school graduation equivalency test;
            (2)   Be employed by the Village as communications officer for the Public Safety Department; and
            (3)   Have been employed as a communications officer and/or an auxiliary public safety officer for not less than two (2) years; or
         c.   Completed not less than forty five (45) credit hours (or the equivalent) with an overall grade point average of not less 2.0 (or the equivalent) at an accredited college or university; provided, that no person who qualifies to take the examination on the basis of college or university credits earned shall be eligible to be sworn in as a public safety officer unless such person has, at the time of the swearing in, completed not less than sixty (60) credit hours (or the equivalent) with an overall grade point average of not less 2.0 (or the equivalent) at an accredited college or university; or
         d.   Served at least two (2) years of full-time active military service in a branch of the armed forces of the United States and have received an honorable discharge.
   B.   The provisions of subsection A of this section supersede and replace the rules and regulations of the Board of Public Safety Commissioners of the Village with regard to the requirements to be met by persons seeking original appoint to the office of public safety officer of the Village.
   C.   In the event that there is a conflict between the provisions of this section and the provisions of any rules or regulation of the Board of Public Safety Commissioners of the Village, or any prior ordinance enacted by the Corporate Authorities of the Village, the provisions of this section shall govern and control.
