905.10  SIDEWALK AND CURBS CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS.
   (a)    Materials.  Sidewalks and curbs shall be one course construction of concrete containing six bags of Portland cement per cubic yard poured directly on a compacted subgrade. At buildings, at adjacent existing sidewalks or curbs and otherwise not over six feet on center there shall be three-fourths inch wide asphalt-impregnated fiberboard joints.
   (b)    Thickness.  All sidewalks constructed shall have a uniform thickness of four inches for walks subjected to pedestrian traffic only, and six inches for walks subjected to vehicular traffic. (see Figure 905.10.1)
   (c)    Block Length.  All sidewalks shall be divided along their lengths by asphalt impregnated fiberboard joints into blocks six feet long, except at closures where necessary adjustments shall be approved by the Building Inspector.
   (d)    Curb Dimensions.  Curbs shall be poured as part of sidewalk slab, and shall be marked and separated from sidewalks by cement finisher by grooving, so that the curb shall have a width of six inches. Curbs shall extend above street surfaces not less than five inches in height, nor more than seven inches in height. (see Figure 905.10.1)
   (e)    Grade and Slope.  All sidewalks shall be above and parallel to the established top of the curb grade of the street and slope toward the curb line of the street at the rate of one quarter inch per foot, terminating in a smooth and even manner with the curb. At intersections and crosswalks the sidewalks shall blend with other walks, curbs, streets and alleyways with sloped ramps as necessary to accommodate disabled persons and wheelchairs.
   (f)   Subgrade.  All sidewalks constructed shall be laid on firm subgrade uniformly graded so that the required thickness of walk shall be obtained over its entire surface.
      (1)    Where the sidewalk is to be constructed on freshly excavated earth all loose dirt and organic matter shall be removed from the sidewalk area before placing the concrete.
      (2)    Where the sidewalk is to be constructed on filled earth, the fill shall be thoroughly compacted subsoil, free from roots and other organic matter.
      (3)    No sidewalk or fill shall be placed until the sidewalk area has been stripped of the topsoil.
   (g)    Drains.  When new sidewalks are constructed or old sidewalks renewed or relaid,
all storm water drains now emptying onto the sidewalk area shall be placed beneath the walk and drained into the gutter or to an available storm sewer where possible.
   (h)    Forms.  All sidewalks constructed shall be formed to the required line, grade and slope by the use of either steel or wood forms properly secured so that neither the placing of materials of construction nor the finishing of the surface can disturb them horizontally or vertically.

   (i)    Final Depth.  A minimum depth of twelve inches (12") is required from the turndown point - (see Figure 905.10.1). (1-4-05)
