§ 37.41  FIRE CAPTAIN.
   (A)   Class title. Fire Captain.
   (B)   Characteristics of class. Under direction, performs supervisory and skilled work in directing the activities of the fire company in firefighting, rescue, emergency medical services and dealing with hazardous materials; reports directly to the Assistant Fire Chief on a daily basis or Incident Commander as needed or assigned.
   (C)   Examples of duties. Responds to fire alarms. Helps determine what equipment and apparatus will be used. Makes decisions as to the best method of extinguishing fires and other emergency incidents and directing firefighting activities until relieved of command by the Assistant Fire Chief or Fire Chief. Supervises, at the appropriate station, the keeping of fire apparatus and equipment at a state of readiness and inspecting apparatus and equipment at the station to determine need for maintenance and repair work. Supervises, at the appropriate station, the cleaning and minor maintenance of quarters, equipment, and apparatus. Inspects personnel and helps maintain discipline at the assigned station. Assists in enforcing standard operating procedures, encouraging safe work practices of all personnel at the station and on fire ground. Assists in enforcing all city policies and rules and regulations. Works regular assigned shift as a duty firefighter. Performs miscellaneous duties as needed or directed. Assists in developing personnel and equipment plans for the department. Attends required officers meetings as directed.
   (D)   Minimum qualifications.
      (1)   Training and experience.  Formal instruction in firefighting methods and techniques, and progressively responsible experience in firefighting, rescue, emergency, medical service and hazardous materials.
      (2)   Special necessary requirements.
         (a)   Certification as a Kentucky Emergency Medical Technician.
         (b)   Certification as a Kentucky Career Firefighter,  certified in hazardous materials training at the minimum of the technician's level.
      (3)   Special knowledge, skills and abilities. Ability to analyze situations correctly and quickly and to adopt effective courses of action with regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances. Ability to maintain the discipline and respect of subordinates in a fair and effective manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with subordinates. Completion of a minimum of eight years of service as a full time firefighter. Same physical abilities as necessary for the function of a firefighter, as found in § 37.29(D)(3).
   (E)   Compensation. Compensation for the rank of Fire Captain shall be in accordance with Grade 23 of the wage and salary scale as found in § 37.05, with an additional annual stipend of $800 to be paid on a pro rata basis throughout the year with the Fire Captain regular compensation pursuant to Grade 23.
