254.07 LABORATORY TECHNICIAN.
   (a)   In General. The Laboratory Technician shall assist in the performance of laboratory analysis, implementation and operation of the Industrial Waste Pretreatment Program and other related work.
   (b)   Distinguishing Features of the Class. The position of Laboratory Technician is a high level, professional, technical position. It involves responsibility for the accuracy and methods of all laboratory analysis. The work is performed in accordance with State and local regulations and is under the direct supervision of the Chief Plant Operator and/or Chemist.
   (c)   Duties. The Laboratory Technician shall:
      (1)   Perform specialized and complex chemical, bacteriological and physical tests and analyses of raw, partially treated and treated waste water and by-products to determine efficiency of waste water treatment plant processes.
      (2)   Collect and perform necessary analyses of samples in conjunction with the City's industrial pretreatment program when necessary.
      (3)   Prepare standard solutions and determine their exact concentration.
      (4)   Prepare reports of laboratory analyses and submit them to the Chief Plant Operator in the absence of the Chemist.
   (d)   Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. The Laboratory Technician shall have a sound basis in chemistry and/or bacteriology and be able to follow oral and written instructions, paying attention to many detailed and specific instructions.
   (e)   Basic Qualifications. The Laboratory Technician shall be a high school graduate or equivalent, have a strong background in chemistry and or biology and have a valid driver's license issued by the State.
   (f)   Additional Requirements.
      (1)   The Laboratory Technician may be required to collect samples on special occasions. This may require the Laboratory Technician to enter areas using ladders or steep stairs or to enter unstable areas near deep, turbulent water.
      (2)   The Laboratory Technician may be required to possess a Wastewater Works Class I, II or III Certificate or a Class I, II, III or IV Laboratory Technician Certificate.
      (3)   The Laboratory Technician must have the skills and ability necessary to use a standard self-contained breathing apparatus.
      (4)   The Laboratory Technician must supply his or her own transportation to and from the job site.
      (5)   The Laboratory Technician must be able to speak, write and understand the English language with a high degree of clarity and use a standard phone system in a professional manner.
