(a) In General. The Chemist performs laboratory work, is responsible for computer analysis of all waste water treatment for monthly reports and supervises all sampling and analysis. The chemist also does related work as required.
(b) Distinguishing Features of the Class. The position of Chemist is a high level, professional, technical position. It involves responsibility for the accuracy and methods of all laboratory analyses. The work is performed in accordance with State and local regulations and is under the direct supervision of the Chief Plant Operator.
(c) Duties. The Chemist shall:
(1) Perform specialized and complex chemical, bacteriological and physical tests and analyses of raw, partially treated and treated waste water and by-products to determine efficiency of waste water treatment plant processes.
(2) Perform necessary analyses of samples in conjunction with the City's Federal Industrial Waste Pretreatment Program.
(3) Prepare standard solutions and determine their exact concentration.
(4) Prepare reports of laboratory analyses and submit them to the Chief Plant Operator.
(5) Carry out other duties deemed necessary by the Chief Plant Operator.
(d) Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. The Chemist shall:
(1) Have thorough knowledge of modern waste water treatment theory;
(2) Have a sound basis of chemistry and bacteriology;
(3) Be able to follow oral and written instructions, paying attention to many detailed and specific instructions; and
(4) Be able to take the initiative to solve problems which may arise.
(e) Basic Qualifications. The Chemist shall have actual laboratory experience in waste water treatment or related fields, a college degree with a strong background in chemistry and/or biology and a valid driver's license issued by the State.
(f) Additional Requirements.
(1) The Chemist must be available for emergencies twenty-four hours a day and supply his or her own transportation to and from the job site.
(2) The Chemist must possess a Waste Water Works Class I, II or III Certificate, or be able to certify for the same in two years.
(3) The Chemist must be able to speak and understand the English language with a high degree of clarity and must be able to use a standard phone system in a professional manner.
(4) The Chemist will also determine the correct place and area for sample collection. This may require him or her to enter an area using a ladder or steep stairs or to enter slippery, overgrown areas in an attempt to collect water samples.
(5) The Chemist must be able to use a standard self-contained breathing apparatus.
