On the second Tuesday in June, in the year One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-Five (1945), there shall be elected by the qualified voters of said city, a mayor, three (3) members of the common council, each councilman from separate wards, a chief of police and street commissioner, who shall hold office for the respective period of time hereinbefore set forth. The mayor and three (3) members of the common council who were elected at the regular municipal election held on the second Tuesday in January, One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-three (1943) and the chief of police and street commissioner who were elected at the regular municipal election held on the second Tuesday in January, in the year One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-four (1944), shall hold over in their respective offices until their successors are elected at the general municipal election to be held on the second Tuesday in June, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty-five (1945), and duly qualified.
In order to effectuate the purposes of this section and of sections seven (7), eight (8), nine (9), and twelve (12), all as amended, an extra or intervening municipal election shall be held on the second Tuesday in June of the year One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-six (1946), at which election there shall be elected by the qualified voters of said City a recorder and three (3) members of the common council, each of said councilmen from separate wards, all of whom shall hold office until their successors are elected at the regular municipal election to be held on the second Tuesday in June of the year One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-seven (1947), as provided in the next paragraph hereof, and duly qualified. The recorder and three (3) members of the common council who were elected at the regular municipal election held on the second Tuesday in January of the year One Thousand, Nine hundred and Forty-four (1944), shall hold over in their respective offices until their successors are so elected and qualified.
On the second Tuesday in June of the year One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty-seven (1947), there shall be elected by the qualified voters of said city a recorder and three (3) members of the common council, each of said councilmen from separate wards, as well also as a chief of police and street commissioner as hereinbefore provided, who shall hold office for the respective full periods of time as provided in sections seven (7), eight (8), and nine (9) as amended.
And thereafter said officials and council members shall be elected at biennial elections in the same alternate manner. Notwithstanding any other provision herein to the contrary, beginning in the year 1983, and biennially thereafter, the municipal election shall be held on the first Tuesday in May. In the year 2007, persons elected to the positions of Chief of Police, Street Commissioner, Recorder, second ward council member, third ward council member and fourth ward council members shall each hold three-year terms of office. Commencing the year 2008, and biennially thereafter, the municipal election shall be held on the second Tuesday in May contemporaneously with the county election. Due to the change in election year, the Mayor, first ward council member, fifth ward council member and sixth ward council member each of whom were elected in 2005, have agreed and shall hold their respective offices for an abridged three-year term. In election year 2008 and for each term thereafter, persons elected to the positions of Mayor, first ward council member, fifth ward council member and sixth ward council member shall hold four-year terms of office. In election year 2010 and for each term thereafter, persons elected to the positions of Chief of Police, Street Commissioner, Recorder, second ward council member, third ward council member and fourth ward council member shall each hold four-year terms of office. All elected officers hereinbefore mentioned shall assume office on the first day of July immediately following such election. (3-10-83; 2-26-07.)
