§ 909.02 DUCTILE IRON PIPE; FITTINGS; INSPECTIONS; LAYING PIPE; PIPE JOINTS.
   (a)   Ductile iron pipe and fittings. Under this item, the contractor shall furnish and place all the materials for and shall properly connect, at the locations shown on the plans or as directed, all ductile iron water pipe, all standard fittings and all special fittings necessary for the completion of the work.
   (b)   Mechanical joint ductile iron pipe. Mechanical joint type ductile iron pipe shall be Class 52 and shall be equipped with compression joints.
   (c)   Inspection. Makers of all ductile iron pipe and fittings used on the work, shall furnish a sworn statement of inspection and testing in accordance with the requirements of the above mentioned specifications of the AWWA. All ductile iron pipe and fittings will be subject to inspection and approval by the Public Utilities Director after delivery and no broken, cracked, misshapen, imperfectly coated or otherwise damaged or unsatisfactory pipe shall be used.
   (d)   Laying pipe.
      (1)   Suitable tools and appliances for the safe and convenient handling of the pipes and fittings shall be used. Care shall be taken to prevent damage to the inside and outside coatings of the pipe. Pipe which is defective in any respect shall not be laid. Pipe found to be defective after laying shall be removed and replaced with sound pipe or fittings at the expense of the contractor.
      (2)   Pipe and fittings shall be cleaned before laying and kept clean until the work is completed. Pipe shall be laid to conform with the lines and grades given by the Public Utilities Director.
      (3)   Pipe shall be laid on good foundations. Bedding and backfill shall be approved by the Public Utilities Director. If required by the Public Utilities Director, additional excavation and refill to grade with suitable materials shall be made. The Public Utilities Director may require blocking at two points along each length of pipe. Blocking shall be left in place.
      (4)   Where pipe cutting is required to fit in the line, cuts shall be at right angles to the axis of the pipe and so as to leave a smooth end.
   (e)   Pipe joints. In joining mechanical ductile iron pipe, the pipe shall be connected one section at a time according to city standards.
