10-1-4: SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS:
The Chief of Police shall have the authority, and he is hereby authorized, to appoint such number of persons as the Board of Trustees shall from time to time determine, to be known as school crossing guards, which guards, to be eligible for appointment, shall be a person of not less than twenty one (21) years of age and shall be of good moral character and in good health.
The Chief of Police shall have the authority to assign guards to such localities and for such periods of time as shall be best suited to afford protection to those attending schools, and said Chief of Police shall be the supervisor of the duties of the guards.
Guards shall maintain the orderly movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic consistent with the safety of children attending schools in the Village, and shall adhere to and be governed by all the rules and regulations of the Police Department insofar as such rules and regulations are applicable to and consistent with the special class of duties prescribed for school crossing guards. Guards shall also comply with all other applicable ordinances, rules and regulations adopted by the Village.
Said guards shall not be a part of or affiliated with the Village Police Department in any official capacity except that they shall have and exercise such limited police powers as may be delegated to them by the Chief of Police, and the guards may be dismissed by said Chief of Police when he finds such dismissal to be in the best interest of the Village. The Village Board may also dismiss any guard for any reason it shall deem sufficient.
Crossing guards shall be paid in accordance with the rate of pay as from time to time set forth by the Corporate Authorities. (Ord. 291, 11-5-1968; amd. 1979 Code)
