6-4A-23: SCHOOL BUSES:
   A.   Restrictions For Drivers Approaching A School Bus:
      1.   The driver of any vehicle, upon meeting or overtaking, from either direction, any school bus that has stopped on the highway for the purpose of receiving or discharging pupils, shall stop the vehicle before reaching the school bus when there is in operation on the school bus the visual signals as specified by the vehicle code and this title, and the driver shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion, the driver of the vehicle is signaled by the school bus driver to proceed, or the visual signals are no longer in operation.
      2.   The driver of a vehicle upon a highway having four (4) or more lanes that permits at least two (2) lanes of traffic to travel in opposite directions need not stop the vehicle upon meeting a school bus that is stopped in the opposing roadway; and need not stop the vehicle when driving upon a controlled access highway when passing a school bus traveling in either direction that is stopped in a loading zone adjacent to the surfaced or improved part of the controlled access highway where pedestrians are not permitted to cross.
   B.   Restrictions For Drivers Of School Buses:
      1.   The stop signal arm required by the Vehicle Code shall be extended after the school bus has come to a complete stop for the purpose of loading or discharging pupils and shall be closed before starting out again. The stop signal arm shall not be extended at any other time.
      2.   The alternately flashing red signal lamps of a four (4) lamp or eight (8) lamp flashing signal system required by the Vehicle Code shall be actuated after the school bus has come to a complete stop for the purpose of loading or discharging pupils, and shall be turned off before starting out again. The red signal lamps shall not be actuated at any other time except as provided in subsection B3 of this section.
      3.   The alternately flashing amber signal lamps of an eight (8) lamp flashing signal system, or the alternately flashing red signal lamps of a four (4) lamp flashing signal system, required by the Vehicle Code shall be actuated continuously during not less than the last one hundred feet (100') traveled by the bus before stopping for the purpose of loading or discharging pupils within a business or residential district, and during not less than the last two hundred feet (200') traveled by the bus outside a business or residential district. The amber signal lamps shall remain actuated until the bus is stopped. The amber signal lamps shall not be actuated at any other time. (Ord. 2005-02-333, 2-7-2005)
   C.   Penalty: In addition to other remedies the Village may seek, any person, firm, or corporation convicted of violating this section shall be subject to a mandatory fine pursuant to title 13, chapter 1, "Fee Schedule", of this Code. (Ord. 2005-02-333, 2-7-2005; amd. Ord. 2018-12-279, 12-3-2018)
