618.25 KEEPING CHICKENS.
   The keeping of chickens may be permitted subject to the following:
   (a)   A maximum of six (6) female chickens may be kept on a lot up to 20,000 square feet in area.
   (b)   Roosters are not permitted.
   (c)   Chickens shall be kept in an enclosed or fenced area, such as a coop and run, at all times.
   (d)   Chicken coops are allowed in the rear yard only, As follows:
      (1)    Minimum of fifteen (15) feet from side yard lot line on lot 100' wide or greater.
      (2)    Minimum of ten (10) feet from side yard lot line on lots up to 100' wide.
      (3)    Minimum of fifteen (15) feet from rear lot line
      (4)    Minimum of twenty (20) feet from an adjoining dwelling structure
      (5)    Not visible from right-of-way
   (e)   The chicken coop and run must be designed to ensure that the health and well-being of the chickens is not endangered by the manner of keeping or confinement. All animals shall be provided with a covered, predator-proof coop, cage or other shelter that is thoroughly ventilated, designed to be easily accessed and cleaned, and of sufficient size to permit free movement of the chickens. A minimum of two (2) square feet shall be provided per chicken within the chicken coop.
   (f)   Chickens shall have access to an outdoor run, which shall be adequately fenced or otherwise bounded to contain the birds on the property and to prevent access by predators. Any additional areas chickens are granted access to must have adequate safeguards, such as rear yard fencing to protect the chickens from animals and to prevent unauthorized access to the chickens by members of the general public.
   (g)   Chicken coops are only permitted on the same lot and at such time as a main dwelling unit has been constructed.
   (h)   Chickens must be kept in coops from dusk to dawn.
   (i)   Slaughtering of chickens is not permitted on the property.
   (j)   The facility must be kept in good repair maintained in a clean and sanitary condition free of vermin, obnoxious smells and substances. The facility shall not create a nuisance or disturb neighboring residents due to noise, odor damage or threats to public health.
   (k)   No storage of chicken manure is allowed within fifteen (15) feet of the side yard lot lines.
   (l(   Whomever violates this section is guilty of a minor misdemeanor for the first offense, a fourth degree misdemeanor for the second offense, a third degree misdemeanor for the third offense and a second degree misdemeanor for the fourth offense or any subsequent offense. Penal ty shall be as provided in Section 698.02.
