1531.02 INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS.
   (a)   Location. At least one approved automatic fire detection and alarm device shall be installed in each guest room of all hotels and motels. Each hallway in all hotels and motels shall have at least one approved automatic fire detection and alarm device located every thirty feet along the hallway and at the head of each set of stairs leading to a floor containing guest rooms.
   (b)   Standards. All automatic fire detection and alarm devices shall be installed in accordance with the standards set forth in Sections 4101:2-89-04 and 4101:2-89-05 of the Ohio Basic Building Code, in such a manner as to assure that rising smoke is not obstructed from reaching the detector. Hallway and stairwell detectors shall be installed so as to assure that the detector intercepts rising smoke before it reaches a guest room, and detectors within guest rooms shall be installed so as to assure that rising smoke is detected before it reaches the sleeping area. All hallway and stairwell detectors shall be wired directly to the building's main enunciator panel. It is preferred that all guest room detectors also be wired to the building main power supply. However, such guest room detectors may be powered by a self-monitored battery or operated in a plug-in outlet which is fitted with a plug restrainer device, provided the outlet is not controlled by any switch other than the building's main power supply.
   (c)   Approval. As used in this chapter, "approved automatic fire detection and alarm device" or "approved detector" means a device or system providing an emergency function without the necessity of human intervention, capable of sensing heat, smoke or other visible or invisible products of combustion, and providing a suitable alarm thereof activated as a result of a predetermined temperature rise, rate of rise of temperature, or increase in the level of combustion products. All such approved detectors shall be installed in conformity with the Building Code and this chapter and shall be approved by the Fire Chief or Municipal Fire Safety Inspector and listed as approved by the Fire Chief or Municipal Fire Safety Inspector for the purpose for which they are intended. Such list of approved detectors may be subsequently amended by the Fire Chief or Municipal Fire Safety Inspector as necessary, but approval of any particular detector shall be permanent unless the Fire Chief or Municipal Fire Safety Inspector subsequently finds that the equipment is hazardous or unreliable, in which case the Fire Chief or Municipal Fire Safety Inspector may suspend or revoke approval and determine whether replacement of such existing equipment shall be required.
   (d)   Alternative Installation. As an alternative to self-contained automatic fire detection and alarm devices, an approved fire detection system may be installed. Each such fire detection system must be individually approved and a permit issued therefor by the Fire Chief. (Ord. 1995-45. Passed 12-12-95.)
