907.09 BRACING SYSTEM.
   (a)    The erection of the bracing system shall be carried along simultaneously with the excavation. At no time shall the sides or exposed faces of any excavation be unsupported.
A temporary bracing system may be provided for a vertical distance of not more than five feet but only for such time as it is necessary to permit erection of the required bracing system.
In hard compact materials in the cases of trenches where mechanical excavating equipment of the pull-shovel, dragline trenching machine or similar type of equipment, is used or in the case of other excavations, excluding tunnels, less than twenty feet in depth, the erection of the bracing system may be withheld, but not to exceed twenty-four hours until the excavation is completed. Such unsupported trench shall not extend more than sixteen feet beyond the bucket in its most extended position at the ground surface. The sides of such other excavations may remain unsupported only to such extent and for such time as is necessary to permit operation of the mechanical excavating equipment being used.
Excavated or other material shall not be stored within eighteen inches of the side of the excavation. (Ord. 5138. Passed 9-20-50.)
   (b)   Notwithstanding the requirements of Sections 907.07 to 907.09, the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act shall apply where applicable.
