907.07 SIDES AND FACES OF EXCAVATION; BRACING.
The sides or exposed faces of all excavations except those made in rock or hard slag which, in all the case of tunnels, are of any depth whatsoever, which in the case of trenches extend more than five feet in depth and which in the case of all other excavations except shafts on tunnel work extend more than ten feet in depth below the surface from which the excavation as a whole was or is started, shall be supported and held in place by sheeting or sheet piling and bracing and/or shoring and/or other devices, means or methods, all of which is hereinafter referred to as the bracing system, in such manner as to prevent such sliding, slipping, caving, squeezing or other movement as would endanger, either directly or indirectly, the lives of, or subject to injury, the employees and/or workmen working in the excavation.
Conformity with these requirements is not necessary, however, if and when the sides or exposed faces of such excavations are sloped to the angle of repose of the material being excavated.
Such bracing system shall be designed to resist all loads which it might reasonably and in accordance with good engineering practice be expected to support, including not only those resulting from the weight of the soil or other material itself, but also those resulting from vehicular traffic, streetcars, railroads, railways or other transportation facilities, surface and/or subsurface structures, stored materials, including materials removed from the excavation, stored or operating construction machinery or equipment and/or previous excavations.
