Chimneys shall be built at least three feet above flat roofs and one foot above the ridges of peak roofs. Wherever flue lining is specified, firebricks may be substituted. Chimneys shall not rest upon or be carried by wooden floors, beams or brackets, nor shall they be hung from wooden rafters. In frame buildings, chimneys shall always be built from the ground up or rest on basement walls. No increase in the wall thickness of chimneys or any projecting masonry shall be permitted within a distance of twelve inches above the rafters or any floor through which the chimney passes.
