The Mayor of the City of Eureka shall be elected as an officer of the City separate and apart from the Council. No person shall be eligible for the office of Mayor unless he is at the time of assuming such office at least twenty-six (26) years of age and an elector of the City. In addition he shall be a registered voter and a resident of the City at the time nomination papers are issued to him as provided for in Section 10227 of the Elections Code of the State of California as the same now exists or may hereafter be amended or superseded.
