UNIFORM PROPERTY NUMBERING SYSTEM
A uniform system of numbering properties and principal buildings, as shown on the map identified by the title “Etowah, Tennessee-Property Numbering System”, which is filed in the office of the Building Inspector, is hereby adopted for use in the city. This map and all explanatory matter thereon are hereby adopted and made a part of this subchapter.
(1994 Code, § 16-301)
(A) All properties or parcels of land within the corporate limits of the city shall hereafter be identified by reference to the uniform numbering system adopted herein; all existing numbers of property and buildings shall be changed to conform to the system herein adopted within 90 days of the property owner’s receipt of the notice of change from the city.
(B) The numbering of buildings on each street shall begin at the base lines indicated on the map titled “Etowah, Tennessee-Property Numbering System”. All numbers shall be assigned on the basis of one number for each ten feet of frontage along the street. Grid lines, as shown on the property numbering map, indicate the point at which numbers will change from one hundred to the next higher hundred. All buildings on the south side of east-west streets and east of north-south streets shall bear odd numbers, and all buildings on the north side of east-west streets and west side of north-south streets shall bear even numbers.
(C) All buildings facing streets not extending through to the base line shall be assigned the same relative numbers as if the said streets had extended to the said base line.
(D) Each principal building shall bear a number assigned to the frontage on which the front entrance is located. In case a lot is occupied by more than one dwelling unit, with the exception of a mobile home park, each dwelling unit shall be assigned a separate number. If a principal building or group complex is occupied by more than one business, each separate front entrance of said principal building or group complex shall bear a separate number.
(1994 Code, § 16-302)
(A) The Building Inspector shall be responsible for administering and enforcing the numbering system. In the performance of this responsibility, he or she shall be guided by the provisions of § 151.46 of this chapter.
(B) The Building Inspector shall keep a record of all numbers assigned under this subchapter.
(1994 Code, § 16-303)
(A) Numerals indicating the official number for each principal building or for each front entrance of a principal building or group complex shall be posted in such a manner as to be visible from the street on which the property fronts.
(B) Within 90 days after notice from the city of the new street number, it shall be the responsibility of the individual property owner to secure and post the appropriate set of numerals which shall be at least three inches high.
(C) Whenever any house, building or structure shall be erected or located in the city after the adoption of said uniform system of house and building numbering, in order to preserve the continuity and uniformity of numbers of the houses, buildings and structures, it shall be the duty and responsibility of the owner to procure the correct numerals as designated by the Building Inspector and immediately to post said numerals. No building permit shall be issued for any house, building or structure until the owner has applied for and been assigned by the Building Inspector the official number of the premises. Final approval of any structure erected, repaired, altered or modified after the effective date of the provisions of this subchapter shall be withheld by the Building Inspector until permanent and proper numerals have been properly posted.
