1224.10 PLANT MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS.
   (a)   Trees. Trees shall meet the minimum tree standard immediately after planting with a minimum planting area of sixty-four square feet around the trunk of the tree maintained in either vegetative landscape material or pervious surface cover. The tree species shall be a variety acceptable to the City Engineer and shall predominantly follow these criteria:
      (1)   Recommended street trees. These trees are recommended as street trees because they have good, neat habit, are fairly long lived and strong wooded and are urban tolerant.

      (2)   Unacceptable street trees. These trees are unacceptable for street tree planting because they either are weak wooded, emit noxious odors or are otherwise very messy in fruit and habit.

   (b)   Shrubs. Shrubs shall be a minimum height of twelve inches immediately after planting. Shrubs used to meet the visual screening requirements provided in Section 1224.06 shall conform to the opacity requirements within five years from the time of planting.
   (c)   Vines. Vines used for purposes of this chapter shall be thirty inches in length within one calendar year from the time of planting.
   (d)   Ground Covers (Other Than Lawn Grasses).Ground covers shall be planted so as to provide seventy-five percent coverage within one calendar year from the time of planting.
   (e)   Hedges. The height and opacity of hedges shall be as required in subsection (b) hereof.
   (f)   Lawn Grasses. Lawn grasses planted shall be a species capable of thriving in the Englewood area and shall be planted so as to achieve complete coverage. All newly constructed homes, located on a subdivided lot, must have the entire front and side yards sodded with grass, and twenty feet of the rear yard closest to the principal structure shall be sodded. In addition, the balance of the rear yard ust be seeded prior to issuance of the final occupancy permit. Grassed areas of commercial developments and common areas of residential developments may be sodded, sprigged, plugged or seeded, except that solid sod shall be used in swales or other areas subject to erosion, unless other stabilizing techniques are implemented.
   (g)   Synthetic Plant Material. No credit shall be granted for the use of artificial plant material.
   (h)   Architectural Planters. Credit shall be given for the use of architectural planters with the following criteria:
      (1)   Planters for shrubs. Architectural planters for shrubs shall have a planting area of not less than ten square feet and a depth of not less than eighteen inches.
      (2)   Planters for trees. Architectural planters for trees shall have a planting area of not less than sixty-four square feet and a depth of not less than thirty inches.
