(a) Water service lines. Water service lines shall be either copper pipe or plastic pipe and shall have a three-quarter inch or larger inside diameter. Plastic pipe shall be approved for potable water. All pipe intended for use with potable water shall meet the requirements for that purpose specified by the National Sanitation Foundation Testing Laboratory, Inc., or by another organization accredited by federal or state public health agencies as having requirements for that purpose which are no less stringent than those of the National Sanitation Foundation Testing Laboratories, Inc. All such pipe shall carry the seal of approval (or NSF mark) and must carry a rating for internal pressures of 160 pounds per square inch.
(b) Stops. Corporation cocks and curb stops shall be of brass and shall be provided with outlets suitable for copper connections. Curb stops shall be of the roundway type. Fittings for plastic pipe shall be of brass suitable to make connections. Fittings for copper service shall be of copper and shall be of the compression type or soldered-joint type.
(c) Service boxes. Service boxes shall be of the spiral type, with the base of the box of ample size to completely house the curb stop, and shall be capable of extension from a minimum of four feet to a maximum of six feet. Boxes shall be two and one-half inches in diameter for stops one and one-fourth inches and smaller and shall be three inches in diameter for stops over one and one-fourth inches.
(d) Installations.
(1) Each water service pipe shall be connected to the water main through a brass corporation cock. The water main shall be tapped at an angle of 45 degrees, with the vertical angle and stop turned so that the “T” handle will be on top.
(2) The service line shall be laid in the trench sufficiently to allow not less than one foot extra length in its entire length. Such line shall be at least four feet below the grade of the street or sidewalk.
(3) The curb stop shall be placed seven to ten feet streetward from the end of the service line. The terminus of the service line shall be at the lot line or as otherwise indicated on the plans therefor. The cast iron service box shall be placed over the curb stop and held in a vertical position until sufficient backfill has been placed to ensure a permanent vertical position. The top of the box shall be set flush with the established ground surface grade.
(4) In all cases, the service connection shall be located under the direction of the Division of Water and Sewer and a record of the exact location shall be made on the water map by a Division representative.
