(A) Uniformed officers will carry an approve 9mm semi-automatic pistol .357 magnum revolver with a 4" barrel, or other approved firearm.
(1) Smith and Wesson, Colt, or their equal (subject to approval by the Chief of Police), will be authorized for all officers.
(2) Weapons will have a blue or stainless steel finish.
(3) Grips will be of dark grain wood, dark rubber or dark plastic; no pearl or stag, bone, ivory or light colored grips will be permitted.
(B) Plain clothes officers will carry a 9mm semi-automatic, .357 magnum revolver with a 2" or 4" barrel, or other authorized weapon. (Smith and Wesson, Colt or their equivalent, subject to approval by the Chief of Police).
(1) Personal firearms carried by plain clothes officers must conform to the standards as specified for on duty plain clothes officers.
(2) If a plain clothes officer elects to carry a "second weapon" on duty, it must be an approved weapon. Additionally, this "second weapon" must be carried on the officer's person and it must be concealed.
(3) At no time shall a "second weapon" be carried on duty by a plain clothes officer without the approval of the Operations Division Commander and the Chief of Police.
(4) At no time shall plain clothes officers carry "second weapons" in any manner contrary to this section.
(5) On duty weapons, if worn exposed, will be carried in a conservative manner.
(6) Shoulder holsters may be worn with the approval of the Operations Division Commander, but will be worn concealed when in public.
(C) All firearms carried in special undercover assignments must first be approved by the Operations Division Commander and the Chief of Police.
(D) No officer, whether uniformed or in plain clothes, shall be permitted to use or carry any firearm that he/she has not demonstrated proficiency in departmentally structured firearms training sessions.
(B) Ammunition - Officers will carry only factory loaded, department issued ammunition.
(1) City issued ammunition will be Winchester 9mm Luger (Parabellum), 115 grain silvertip for 9mm semi-auto pistols, Winchester .38 caliber, 125 fain silvertip +P for the .357 revolver, and Winchester, .45 caliber.
(2) Factory loaded ammunition will not be altered In any way.
(3) Department ammunition will be replaced annually during one of the range training sessions, or as appropriate.
(F) Additional ammunition - Uniformed officers will carry at least two full reloads. All other officers will carry at least one full reload unless excepted by a Division Commander due to the requirements of a special assignment.
(G) Weapons will be carried fully loaded on duty at all times.
(H) Any officer who elects to carry a weapon off duty shall carry departmental approved firearms and ammunition only. A secondary (backup) on duty weapon is authorized but only upon departmental approval.
(J) A department approved handgun (on duty, off duty, or secondary) intended for official use by any police officer must meet the following requirements;
(1) The firearm must be inspected and approved by the Firearms Training Instructor and the Chief of Police or his designate.
(2) The firearm must be registered with the department by make, model, caliber and serial number.
(3) The officer must demonstrate his/her safe and proficient use of the weapon during regular firearms training sessions.
