9-2-13: MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR ELECTRICAL SERVICE:
The Electrical Code of the City prevails as the final authority for a new construction. This Chapter recognizes that older structures may be entirely safe while not conforming to current code standards. Total conformity to the code in existing structures is not required by this Chapter; however, electrical system defects which constitute a fire or safety hazard must be corrected in accordance with the electrical code.
   A.   The following shall be considered as absolute minimum requirements:
      1.   Where there is electric service available from power lines which are not more than three hundred feet (300') away from a dwelling, every habitable room shall contain not less than two (2) operable convenience outlets, with the exception that in rooms having permanently installed ceiling or wall light fixtures one operable convenience outlet is permissible.
      2.   Every laundry, furnace room and all similar nonhabitable work spaces located in a dwelling or multi-family dwelling shall contain not less than one operable electric light fixture.
      3.   Every electrical service panel must be provided with an approved ground.
      4.   Every bathroom and public hall shall contain not less than one operable ceiling or wall lighting fixture.
      5.   A grounded receptacle shall be provided for laundry equipment and sump pumps.
      6.   Every electrical service shall provide two hundred forty (240) volts and have a minimum capacity of sixty (60) amperes.
   B.   The following installations are prohibited and their presence shall be deemed a hazard:
      1.   Extension cords for other than short term, temporary use.
      2.   Loose or hanging wires.
      3.   Frayed or bare wires.
      4.   Outlets or switches which are defective or without cover plates.
      5.   Fuse or circuit breaker capacity greater than the rating of the circuit it protects. (Ord. 4267, 1-11-1978)
   C.   Amendments to National Electrical Code:
Article 336-3, National Electric Code, 1978 Edition previously adopted by the City, is amended so that Article 336-3 will read as follows:
One and two-family or multi-family dwellings not over three (3) floors above the grade can use non-metallic and non-corrosive cables.
Multi-family dwellings exceeding three (3) floors and all commercial buildings and buildings in fire zones shall use conduit or tubing.
      (Ord. 5411, 12-20-1989)
