ARTICLE 4. PIT BULL DOGS

2-401. PIT BULL DOGS PROHIBITED.

It is hereby declared unlawful to keep, harbor, maintain, possess or allow to run at large any pit bull dog within the corporate limits of the city. (Ord. 290, Sec. 1; Code 2000)

2-402. DEFINITION OF PIT BULL DOGS.

For the purposes of this article, pit bull dog is defined to mean:

   (a)   The bull terrier breed of dog;

   (b)   Staffordshire bull terrier breed of dog;

   (c)   The American pit bull terrier breed of dog;

   (d)   The American Staffordshire terrier breed of dog;

   (e)   Dogs of mixed breed or of other breeds than above listed which breeds or mixed breeds are known as pit bulls, pit bull dogs or pit bull terriers;

   (f)   Any dog which has the appearance and characteristics of being predominantly of the breed of bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American pit bull terrier or American Staffordshire terrier;

   (g)   Any other breed of dog commonly known as pit bulls, pit bull dogs or pit bull terriers or a combination of any of these breeds.

2-403. SEIZURE AND DISPOSAL OF PIT BULL DOGS FOUND W ITHIN THE CITY.

Any pit bull dog, as above defined, found in the city shall be subject to immediate seizure and impoundment by the city. Pit bull dogs impounded by the city shall be handled and disposed of in the same manner as unlicensed dogs seized and impounded by the city, except, in the case of pit bull dogs, if claimed, may not be brought back into the city.
