Notwithstanding Ohio R.C. 124.57, individuals employed as classified Zanesville police officers shall be permitted to be candidates for the office of Sheriff, so long as they comply with the following conditions:
(a) Any Zanesville police officer who is a candidate for the office of Sheriff shall take a leave of absence for a period of ninety days immediately preceding the November election. If the officer has accrued vacation time or comp time, he may be paid during such leave of absence; otherwise the leave of absence shall be without pay.
(b) Prior to beginning such leave of absence, the officer shall continue to fully perform all of his duties as a Zanesville police officer as assigned by his appropriate supervisor, including being available for emergency duties.
(c) The officer shall not engage in any campaign activities while he is on duty.
(d) The officer shall not wear his Zanesville police officer uniform while engaged in any campaign activities.
