(a) “Overtime” means hours actually worked by an employee for which compensation is paid and which exceed forty hours worked by such employee during the course of a week. For purposes of this section, a work week shall begin at 12:01 a.m. each Wednesday and shall end at 12:00 midnight each Tuesday.
(b) An employee must secure the prior written approval of his or her supervisor in order to work overtime unless it is necessary to maintain minimum staffing overtime can be authorized when called in by an officer in charge. In the event of an emergency and the unavailability of his or her supervisor, an employee seeking to work overtime may instead secure the approval of the Mayor. Should the Mayor also be unavailable, the requisite approval may be obtained after the emergency overtime work has been performed. The supervisor approving overtime shall advise the Mayor of such approval. Should the Mayor approve emergency overtime work, he or she shall sign the employee’s time card.
