No person shall drive any vehicle upon any street in the city with a load or part of a load projecting more than four feet beyond the rear end or front end, or more than two feet beyond the sides of the body or carrying part of said vehicle unless there be attached to the extreme ends and sides of such projecting load a warning sign or signal consisting of red cloth at least 18 inches square in daytime or a suitable light, red in color, at night, such sign or signal to be so placed as to the plainly discernible to other drivers and clearly indicating the projecting load.
