921.01 DEFINITIONS.
   Unless the context specifically indicates otherwise, the meaning of terms in these regulations shall be as follows:
   (a)   "Village" means the Village of West Unity, Ohio.
   (b)   "Sewage works" means the facilities for collecting, pumping, treating, and disposing of sanitary sewage and industrial waste.
   (c)   "Superintendent" means the Superintendent of the Division of Sewage Treatment of the Village of West Unity, or his authorized deputy, agent or representative.
   (d)   "Sewage" means a combination or any one of the water-carried wastes from residences, business buildings, institutions, and industrial establishments.
   (e)   "Sanitary sewer" means a pipe or conduit for carrying sanitary sewage.
   (f)   "Public sewer" means a publicly owned sewer to which all adjoining property owners have equal rights.
   (g)   "Private sewer" means a sewer which is not publicly owned and to which all adjoining property owners do not have equal rights.
   (h)   "Storm sewer" or "storm drain" means a sewer which carries storm and surface waters and drainage, but excludes sewage and polluted industrial wastes.
   (i)   "Sewage treatment plant" means any arrangement of devices and structures used for treating sewage.
   (j)   "Industrial wastes" means the liquid wastes from industrial processes as distinct from sanitary sewage.
   (k)   "Garbage" means solid wastes from the preparation, cooking, dispensing of food, and from the handling, storage, and sale of products.
   (l)   "Properly shredded garbage" means the wastes from the preparations, cooking, and dispensing of food that have been shredded to such degree that all particles will be carried freely under the flow conditions normally prevailing in public sewers, with no particle greater than 3/8 inch in any dimension.
   (m)   "Building drain" means that part of the lowest horizontal piping of a drainage system which receives the discharge from soil, waste, and other drainage pipes inside the walls of the building and conveys it to the lateral, beginning three feet outside the inner face of the building wall.
   (n)   "Lateral" means the extension from the building drain to the public sewer or other place of disposal.
   (o)   "B.O.D." (denoting Biochemical Oxygen Demand) means the quantity of oxygen utilized in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter under standard laboratory procedure in five days at 20 degrees centigrade, expressed in parts per million by weight.
   (p)   "pH" means the logarithm of the reciprocal of the weight of hydrogen ions in grams per liter of solution.
   (q)   "Suspended solids" means the solids that either float on the surface or, are in suspension in water, sewage, or other liquids; and which are removable by laboratory filtering.
   (r)   "Natural outlet" means any outlet into a watercourse, pond, ditch, lake or other body of surface or ground water.
   (s)   "Watercourse" means a channel in which a flow of water occurs, either continuously or intermittently.
   (t)   "Person" means any individual, firm, company, association, society, corporation, or group.
   (u)   For the purpose of these Regulations, "Shall" is mandatory; "May" is permissive. (Ord. 2023-02. Passed 4-13-23.)
