8-2-4: CONCRETE SPECIFICATIONS:
   A.   Specifications: All public sidewalks within the village shall be of concrete, shall be constructed under the supervision of the department of public works and, except where special assessment or special taxation ordinances may provide otherwise, shall comply with the specifications set forth below in this Chapter.
   B.   Concrete Proportioning:
      1.   Concrete cement shall be proportioned in accordance with article 408.04 of the Illinois Department of Transportation's Standard Specifications with the modification specified therein.
      2.   The concrete, when tested in the form of six inch (6") cubes at the age of one month, shall have a crushing strength of not less than two thousand (2,000) pounds per square inch.
      3.   Concrete which has partially set shall not be retempered nor used and shall be discarded.
   C.   Laying Cement:
      1.   Upon the subgrade foundation shall be placed a layer or course of Portland cement concrete which shall be five inches (5") in thickness for the full width of the walk. For squares intersecting or crossing driveways, the subgrade foundation shall be cut to a depth of seven inches (7") below the final sidewalk grade. This concrete shall consist of one part Portland cement, two (2) parts sand and three and one-half (31/2) parts crushed stone or gravel, as prescribed in subsection B of this Section.
      2.   The concrete shall be tamped and struck off with a template and shall be floated with a wood or steel float until the surface has a true contour at the exact grade of the finished walk. Care shall be taken not to bring to the surface an excess of water and fine sand by over finishing. The surface shall be given a light brooming after the concrete has begun to harden.
      3.   The walk shall be cut into separate rectangular blocks not more than five feet (5') in length, the surface edges of each being rounded to a one-quarter inch (1/4") radius.
      4.   Expansion joints shall be constructed across the walk and for the full depth of the concrete, at intervals of not more than fifty feet (50'), the edges of the concrete being rounded to a one-quarter inch (1/4") radius. These joints shall be one-half inch (1/2") in width and shall be filled with fiberboard expansion. Similar expansion joints shall be made at all points where the new walk abuts on existing concrete walks, curbs or steps. (1997 Code)
