140.01 ORGANIZATION.
   (a)   There is hereby created a unit to be known as the Wellington Auxiliary Police to be operated within the Police Department of the Municipality, the purpose of which shall be to augment the strength of the Police Department, to supplement the numbers of regular patrolmen and to help safeguard and protect the general health, welfare and safety of the citizens and their property.
   (b)   (1)   Members of the Auxiliary Police may be assigned to perform appropriate duties for and/or at the request of private parties in need of public safety services. All such arrangements shall be made through the chief's office; Wellington Auxiliary Police members shall not be directly employed by private parties, nor otherwise utilize their uniforms, badges, or equipment on behalf of private parties.
      (2)   Private parties desiring such assistance shall be required to reimburse the Village for its costs in making Auxiliary Police available, unless the Council authorizes a waiver or reduction of such fees. The chief shall set an appropriate fee as a condition of approving participation by the auxiliary member(s).
   (c)   Within the Auxiliary Police, there shall be a subdivision known as the Safety Patrol. Members of the Safety Patrol shall serve as crossing guards and shall perform additional duties as assigned. Members of the Safety Patrol shall not have a vote in the operation of the Auxiliary Police and shall not have the same duties as the members of the Auxiliary Police. An individual shall not be permitted to both serve in the Safety Patrol and serve in the regular Auxiliary Police at the same time. (Ord. 2021-58. Passed 1-18-22.)
