The judge and alternate judges shall be appointed by the mayor, with the consent of the governing body, provided that the judge of the municipal court existing in this municipality at the effective date of the ordinance codified in this chapter shall act as judge of the court provided in this chapter until a judge is appointed and qualified under the terms of this chapter.
