(A) Concrete thickness. All concrete sidewalks over cellars shall be at least 8 inches in thickness. When sidewalks extend from lot line to curb, they shall be 6 inches in thickness and shall be separated into sections of 25 square feet; all other sidewalks shall be 5 inches in thickness. When sidewalks are 6 feet in width they shall be separated into sections of 24 square feet. All sidewalks under 6 feet in width shall be separated into sections of 20 square feet. The sections in all cases shall be made in accordance with the best standard practices.
(B) Size of stone used in concrete. The crushed stone or gravel used in making concrete sidewalks shall not exceed 1 inch in diameter, nor be less than 1/4-inch in diameter. Sand shall be coarse, sharp sand and all materials used in making the concrete shall be free from dust, loam, dirt, or other foreign matter. The cement used shall meet the requirements of the standard specifications of the Portland Cement Associations.
(C) Concrete texture. A concrete sidewalk shall be constructed of what is known as 1-course type, and materials shall be thoroughly mixed in the following proportions: 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 3 parts crushed stone or gravel.
(D) Sidewalk surface. The concrete shall be properly troweled so as to provide a smooth surface and so that no stone or large pieces of gravel will appear upon the surface. Expansion joints shall be made in accordance with the best practice in use. All surface edges shall be rounded uniformly and to a radius of ½-inch.
(E) Business sidewalks. Any business property having a hard surface parking lot which abuts a sidewalk in the city, may, when repairing the parking lot, resurface the sidewalk with the same material used for the parking lot, provided, however, that the sidewalk must be marked with painted lines and maintained by the business as a sidewalk.
