(a) Amount. Funeral leave of two days (three days for spouse, parent, or child, including a step-child) shall be granted to all employees, with pay, at the employee's regular straight-time pay for eight hours, in the event of a death in the employee's immediate family. The time off shall be within a consecutive period of four calendar days, one day of which shall include the day of the funeral or memorial service.
(b) Immediate Family. "Immediate family" under this Section means spouse, parent, step-parent, parent-in-law, brother, step-brother, sister, step-sister, child (including foster or step-child), grandchild, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, legal guardian who stands in loco parentis, employee's designated grandparents or designated grandparents of the employee's spouse. Each employee may only take funeral leave for a total of four grandparents and a total of four grandparents of employee's spouse during the term of employment. This may be natural or step-grandparents. Effective January 1, 1989, each employee must designate the name and relationship of the grandparents for which funeral leave will be taken in the future. Funeral leave for grandparents or grandparents-in-law previously deceased in past years must be deducted from the total number designated. Changes in designation due to a change in spouse will be accepted, but the total number allowed during the term of employment shall in no event be more than eight leaves.
(c) Additional leave for the funeral of such an immediate family member may be granted by the Appointing Authority from the employee's available sick leave, for a normal maximum of a total of 40 hours. However, the time off must be reasonably required and requested in advance, and no extra time off will normally be granted unless significant travel time is required, or other specific circumstances require it. On the other hand, the normal maximum may be exceeded by the Appointing Authority when unusual circumstances require it. The Appointing Authority will not arbitrarily withhold approval of the request for additional time off. To attend the funeral of family members or other persons not listed in this provision, employees may apply for vacation leave. (Ord. 42-2012. Passed 12-17-12.)
