6-1-5: ACCIDENTS:
   A.   Immediate Notice Of Accident: The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury or death of any person or damage to property shall immediately by quickest means of communication give notice of such accident to the police department.
   B.   Duty Of Driver To Give Information:
      1.   The driver involved in an accident shall immediately stop such vehicle at the scene of the accident, or as close thereto as possible, and shall give his name, address, registration number of the vehicle he is driving, and exhibit his operator's or driver's license to the person struck, or to the driver or occupants of any vehicle collided with, and any police officer.
      2.   The driver of any vehicle which collides with any vehicle which is unattended shall immediately stop and shall then and there either locate and notify the operator or owner of such vehicle of the name and address of the driver and owner of the vehicle striking the unattended vehicle or shall leave in a conspicuous place in the vehicle struck a written notice giving the name and address of the driver and of the owner of the vehicle doing the striking.
      3.   The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting only in damage to fixtures or other property legally upon or adjacent to a highway shall take reasonable steps to locate and notify the owner of or the person in charge of such property of such fact and of his name and address and of the registration number of the vehicle he is driving and shall upon request exhibit his driver's license and shall make a report of such accident when and as required.
   C.   Report Of Accident By Driver: The driver of any vehicle involved in injury or damage to property to an apparent extent of two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00) or more shall, within twenty four (24) hours, make a detailed report of such accident to the police department. The provisions of this subsection shall not be applicable when the accident has been investigated at the scene by a police officer while such driver was present thereat.
   D.   Investigation Of Accidents; Records: It shall be the duty of the police department to investigate traffic accidents and to arrest and to assist in the prosecution of those persons charged with violations of law causing or contributing to such accidents. The police department shall maintain a suitable system of filing traffic accident reports by location. Such reports shall be available for the use and information of city officials.
   E.   Public Inspection Of Reports:
      1.   All written reports made by persons involved in accidents shall be without prejudice to the individual so reporting and shall be for the confidential use of the police department or other governmental agencies having use for the records for accident prevention purposes; except, that the police department or other governmental agency may disclose the identity of a person involved in an accident when such identity is not otherwise known or when such person denies his presence at such accident.
      2.   No written reports forwarded under the provisions of this subsection shall be used as evidence in any trial, civil or criminal, arising out of an accident; except, that the police department shall furnish upon demand of any party to such trial, or upon demand of any court or certificate showing that a specified accident report has or has not been made to the department in compliance with law, and, if such report has been made, the date, time and location of the accident, the names and addresses of the drivers, the owners of the vehicles involved, and the investigating officers.
