Any person who knowingly or wilfully causes, aids or encourages any boy or girl to be or to become a delinquent child, or who knowingly or wilfully does acts which directly tend to render any such child so delinquent, is guilty of a violation of this section. Instead of imposing such punishment the court may release the defendant from custody on probation for one year upon his or her entering into recognizance, with or without surety, in such sum as the court may direct.
