13-1-1: STREET NAMES AND DESIGNATIONS:
   A.   Approval Of Street Names: No street names shall be used which will duplicate or be confused with the names of existing streets. Existing street names shall be projected wherever possible. The first name of any street designation shall be unique and shall be approved by the 911 agency within whose jurisdiction the village is located. Street names shall be subject to the approval of the village board.
   B.   Street Designations: The following street designation system shall be utilized to differentiate different kinds of public streets:
      1.   Any new public street running in a generally north-south direction shall be named street or drive.
      2.   Any new public street running in a generally east-west direction shall be named avenue or road.
      3.   Major streets running in any direction which are designated with special characteristics such as planted medians shall be named boulevard.
      4.   Eyebrow cul-de-sacs shall retain the numbering system of the public way that they front on and shall not have a separate name.
      5.   Cul-de-sacs shall be named court.
      6.   Any public street that comes back upon itself shall be called circle.
      7.   Any public street that lacks true directional quality shall be named lane.
   C.   Honorary Street Names: There is hereby established a program to provide for honorary street names.
      1.   Application: Persons or organizations proposing an honorary street name for a street located within the Village shall complete and submit an application to the Village clerk. An application proposing an honorary street name shall include the following:
         a.   The signature of a member of the Village Board endorsing the application and the proposed honorary street name.
         b.   A statement explaining how the individual proposed to be honored with an honorary street name qualifies under the guidelines and standards.
      2.   Guidelines: Honorary street names shall meet the following standards:
         a.   The individual proposed to be honored with an honorary street name must have resided or worked in Sugar Grove during their lifetime and must have made significant and long-term contributions through cultural, humanitarian, historic or military achievement.
         b.   There shall be a clear geographical relationship to the street and the nominee.
         c.   The proposed honorary street name shall not duplicate any existing name or be similar either phonetically or in spelling to any other honorary or actual street name.
         d.   An honorary street name shall be applied throughout the entire length of the subject street, except where impractical and in such instance shall be applied to the section of a street designated in the Village Board resolution approving the honorary street name.
         e.   A designation of an honorary street name shall be limited to five (5) years after which it could be extended by Board discretion. At the end of the time period of the designation of an honorary street name, the Village will remove the honorary street sign and make it available to the applicant.
         f.   Honorary street name signs will be distinctive in size and color from the official street name sign and will be installed below the official street name sign.
         g.   All honorary street designations are subject to approval of the Village Board.
      3.   The Village reserves the right to remove a sign at any time. (Ord. 2012-08-21, 8-21-2012; amd. Ord. 2023-09-05PW1, 9-5-2023)
