The Police Department of the City may consist of a Chief, a Deputy Chief, a captain, lieutenants, sergeants, patrol officers, and/or probationary patrol officers. When any member of the Department is appointed Chief or Deputy Chief of the Department unless otherwise provided by Council by an ordinance amending this section, the position occupied by such member prior to his or her appointment as Chief or Deputy Chief shall remain vacant so as to allow such member serving as Chief or Deputy Chief to revert to his or her prior rank at the conclusion of his or her service as Chief or Deputy Chief in accordance with the applicable provisions of these Codified Ordinances and the laws of the State with regard to Police Civil Service.
