Pursuant to Article VI, § 1, of the City Charter, the Police Department may consist of not more than a Police Chief, an Assistant Chief, not more than four Lieutenants, not more than eight Sergeants, not more than 37 patrol officers, not more than two Jail Supervisors, not more than 15 jailers, and not more than 11 full-time dispatchers. Such personnel shall be appointed by the Mayor pursuant to the provisions of the City Charter, the ordinances of the city and, to the extent applicable, the rules of the Civil Service Commission, but appointments of new members of the Department shall not be made without prior approval of the Finance and Safety Committees of Council and the Civil Service Commission.
