§ 1448.01 DEFINITIONS.
   For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   (a)   CHIMNEY. A vertical shaft of masonry (brick or stone exterior) or metal, noncombustible, heat-resisting material approved by the Building Department and approved and tested by Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc. for the use intended, which encloses one or more flues for the purpose of removing products of combustion from solid, liquid or gas fuel.
   (b)   DRAFT HOOD. A device placed in and made a part of the flue pipe from an appliance, or a part of an appliance itself, which is to be designed to assure the ready escape of all the products of combustion in the event of no draft, backdraft and stoppage beyond the draft hood, or to prevent a backdraft from entering the appliance, and to neutralize the effects of stack action of the chimney flue upon the operation of the appliance.
   (c)   FLUE. A vertical passageway for products of combustion.
   (d)   HOOD. As applied to a heating device, means a canopy or a similar device placed over a stove, range or other heating installation connected to a venting duct.
   (e)   SMOKEPIPE. A pipe or breeching connecting a heating apparatus and a flue.
