All excavation required for the installation of a building sewer shall be open trench unless otherwise approved by the City Engineer with substantially vertical sides, using such sheeting as may be necessary. The bottom of the trench granular backfill shall be shaped as nearly as possible to fit the lower half of the sewer to provide for uniform bearing. In the event the trench is excavated below the required grade of the pipe, the excess space shall be filled with gravel in accordance with the city standards and specifications prescribed and on file in the office of the City Engineer. No backfill shall be placed until the work has been inspected.
