(A) Provide all tools, labor and equipment necessary for the safe and expeditious installation of water mains and appurtenances. Install water mains to the lines shown on the drawings, except as specified in this section. Install fittings, valves and hydrants in the locations shown on the drawings.
(B) Water mains installed parallel to existing sanitary sewers or sewage force mains shall have a minimum horizontal separation of ten feet measured from edge of pipe to edge of pipe. Where local conditions prevent this separation, water mains shall be installed with the bottom of the main at least 18 inches above the top of the sewer.
(C) Water mains crossing sanitary sewers or sewage force mains shall have a minimum vertical separation of 18 inches measured edge to edge. This separation shall apply whether the water main is above or below the sewer or force main. Install water mains so that a full length of pipe is centered on the sewer or force main. No water main shall pass through or come in contact with any part of a sanitary sewer manhole.
(D) Water mains shall be installed with a minimum of 54 inches of cover.
(E) Installation of water mains shall conform to manufacturer's recommendations.
(F) Trenches shall be excavated to a width which will provide adequate working space for proper pipe installation, jointing and embedment. Shape the bottom of the trench to give uniform circumferential support to the lower quarter of each pipe. Pipe shall be laid with bell ends facing in the direction of laying.
(G) Lower pipe, fittings, valves and hydrants into the trench by hand, by means of hoists or ropes, or by other suitable tools or equipment which will not damage materials, coatings or linings. Do not drop or dump pipe, fittings, valves or hydrants into the trench.
(H) As each length of pipe is installed, joint the pipe to the previously installed pipe. Bring the pipe to the correct line and grade and secure in place with bedding tamped under and around each side of the pipe. Backfill material shall be deposited and compacted uniformly and simultaneously on each side of the pipe to prevent lateral displacement.
(I) Wherever it is necessary to deflect pipe from a straight line in either a vertical or horizontal plane, the amount of deflection allowed shall not exceed that required by the pipe specifications. If the alignment requires joint deflections in excess of the allowable, furnish and install fittings or a sufficient number of shorter lengths of pipe.
(J) The cutting of pipe shall be done in a neat and workmanlike manner without damage to PVC pipe or to the cement lining of D.I. pipe. Use a cutting machine so as to leave smooth end at right angles to the axis of the pipe. Flame cutting by use of an oxyacetylene torch shall not be allowed on ductile iron pipe. Bevel the edges of all pipe after cutting.
