When open drainage channels require various lining types to attain ultimate design capacity, the earth sections of the drainage channel and its structures shall be designed and constructed to the ultimate design required. Preference shall be given to vegetated and natural channel design. Hardened channel linings such as riprap and concrete shall be specified only in cases where vegetated linings or reinforced vegetative linings are not practicable.
