The sunflower (genus Helianthus) is hereby designated as the city's official floral emblem. In her nomination of the sunflower, Taylor Sutter, a Central Elementary School sixth grader wrote, "Each petal on the sunflower could represent the number of wonderful families in Shelby and the number of schools and businesses."
