The subgrade or subbase shall be adequately moistened just before the concrete is placed. The concrete shall be placed three-fourths of an inch higher than the finished slab, tamped until all voids are removed and free mortar appears on the surface, thoroughly spaded along the edges, struck off to the true grade and finished to a true and even surface with suitable trowels and floats. The surface shall be divided by grooves constructed at right angles to the center line of the sidewalk. These groves shall extend to one-quarter the depth of the sidewalk, shall not be less than one-eighth inch nor more than one-quarter inch in width and shall have the edge rounded. No slab shall be longer than six feet nor less than four feet, unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. The contractor may divide the surface of the sidewalks by sawing the joints. All exposed edges of concrete walk, curb, and gutter shall be edged with an edging tool having a one- quarter inch to one-half inch radius except as shown on the drawings.
