4-3-2: SIGNS; RESIDENTIAL ZONING DISTRICTS:
   (A)   Nameplates which may be illuminated are permitted subject to the following regulations:
      1.   In R-1 and R-2 zoning districts, nameplates shall not exceed one square foot in area. In R-3 zoning districts, only such nameplates as are permitted in R-1 and R-2 shall be permitted for a single-family or a two-family dwelling, and for a multiple-family dwelling, a nameplate may be not more than three (3) square feet in area, provided it indicates only the name, or name, address and telephone number of the building; and the management thereof.
      2.   Such nameplates may be affixed flat against the building, but not located higher than ten feet (10') above average ground grade at the building walls or may also be located in a yard adjoining a street, provided they are not nearer to the street than one-half (1/2) the depth of the yard, and do not exceed four feet (4') in height.
   (B)   Unilluminated "for sale" and "for rent" signs are permitted subject to the following:
There shall be not more than one sign per lot, except on a corner lot two (2) signs, one facing each street, shall be permitted. No signs shall exceed twelve (12) square feet in area and be closer than eight feet (8') to any side or rear yard, nor be closer to the front lot line than one-half (1/2) the depth of the front yard. Such a sign, when affixed flat against buildings shall not project higher than ten feet (10') above the average finished grade at the building walls; and a ground sign shall not project higher than five feet (5') above a ground grade at the sign.
   (C)   Church bulletin signs, and nameplates which may be illuminated with nonflashing illumination, are permitted subject to the following:
      1.   There shall be not more than one church bulletin sign having a gross surface area of not more than sixteen (16) square feet on a lot, except on a corner or through lot one such sign shall be permitted on or in front of each side of the principal building facing a street, provided that such a sign not be nearer to a lot line abutting a street than one- half (1/2) the required distance of the yard abutting a street and shall have a height of not more than eight feet (8') above finished grade, and such a sign affixed to a building wall shall not have a height of more than ten feet (10') above the ground or walk below it.
      2.   A nameplate having not more than sixteen (16) square feet of gross surface area may be affixed to the wall of the principal building containing the main entrance doors and in a corner or through lot one additional nameplate having not more than eight (8) square feet of gross surface area may be affixed to each wall of the principal building containing secondary entrance doors and facing a lot line abutting a street and no nameplate shall have a height of more than three feet (3') above the height of the entrance doors.
   (D)   Temporary signs for unified housing developments are permitted subject to the following:
      1.   In a unified housing development containing more than twelve (12) dwelling units initially under single ownership or control, one sign in addition to the nameplate may be erected along each street frontage at the perimeter boundary of the development. Such sign may be a ground sign or attached to a building, and contain the name and address of the developer, and name, address, and telephone number of the sales or rental agents, provided that such sign:
         (a)   May be illuminated with nonflashing illumination provided direct rays of light shall not project into an adjacent lot or a street;
         (b)   Shall not project higher than thirty feet (30') above grade;
         (c)   Shall not be located nearer than fifteen feet (15') from a property line abutting a street, except it shall not be nearer than fifty feet (50') from the lot corner formed by the intersection of any two (2) street right of way lines and no nearer than twenty feet (20') from a lot line of an adjacent lot; and
         (d)   Shall be removed at the completion of construction of the development. (1977 Code)
   (E)   Nonilluminating signs only in connection with "home occupations" as defined in section 10-1-4 of this code are permitted subject to the following:
      1.   There shall be not more than one sign per lot. No sign shall exceed six and one-quarter (61/4) square feet in area and be closer than eight feet (8') to any side or rear yard, nor be closer to the front lot line than one-half (1/2) the depth of the front yard and shall have a height of not more than eight feet (8') above finished grade and such a sign affixed to a building wall shall not have a height of more than ten feet (10') above the finished grade below it.
