1349.27 BUILDING CLASSIFICATION; REQUIREMENTS; DEFINITIONS.
   (a)   All wiring systems acceptable to the National Electrical Code shall be acceptable for use in the City as stated in this subsection and subsections (b) to (e) hereof. These systems shall be installed using the strict requirements and conditions of the latest edition of the National Electrical Code. All wiring systems shall be installed using proper fittings, connectors, couplings, insulators, etc., which are listed and labeled for the specified purpose by an appropriate testing laboratory. Proper cutting tools, crimping tools, bending tools, etc. specified by the manufacturer of the wiring method, shall be used when installing each system. Manufacturers' specifications shall be followed when installing all wiring systems and equipment.
   (b)   Types AC and MC cables, with an internal bonding strip and all nonmetallic wiring methods shall only be acceptable when an insulated equipment grounding conductor, sized in accordance to Table 250-95 of the National Electrical Code is contained in the cable assembly or conduit with the circuit conductors.
   (c)   (1)   Rigid nonmetallic conduit containing service entrance conductors and emerging from the ground or floor shall be installed in schedule 80 or rigid metal conduit, for example, service entrance laterals (underground) between the transformer and meter base or main disconnect.
(2)   Where other wiring is judged by the Electrical Inspector to be subject to physical damage, schedule 80 PVC or rigid metal conduit shall be used.
   (d)   Aluminum wire shall only be acceptable for service entrance purposes up to the main disconnecting means. The internal wiring of a building, after the main service disconnect, shall be installed using only copper conductors.
   (e)   (1)   In mercantile/commercial and industrial/plant installations, only metallic wiring methods, rigid nonmetallic conduit, electrical nonmetallic tubing and nonmetallic liquidtite shall be acceptable within or upon these buildings.
(2)   In residential multiple family installations (three or more dwelling units), nonmetallic wiring methods (NM, UF, SE, SNM) cables shall be acceptable within or upon these buildings only where these methods are concealed, with approved fire separation between each individual dwelling unit and also between each individual dwelling unit and the buildings common areas (hallways, entrances, etc.). All installations, one and two-family residential, multiple family, residential, mercantile/commercial and industrial/plant, shall comply with the NEC as stated in subsection (a) hereof and Section 1349.25.
   (f)   "Mercantile/commercial building", for the purpose of this chapter, means any building which, in whole or in part, is used for any purpose whatsoever other than plants (see Section 1349.09) or private dwellings designed to house not more than two families.
