In the event no allowance is payable under Section 2.124.1240 of this chapter, and in the event that a member of this plan dies either after qualification for voluntary service retirement or after retirement for service or for disability, then either one-half of the retirement allowance to which such member would have been entitled if the member had retired at the time of death or one-half of his or her retirement allowance, as the case may be, shall be continued throughout life, or until remarriage, to his or her surviving spouse.
