The retirement system manager may require any member of this plan retired on a disability retirement allowance and under the applicable age of voluntary service retirement to undergo medical examinations from time to time without cost to the member. The examination shall be made by a physician or surgeon appointed by the retirement system manager, provided that said examination shall be performed within a reasonable distance of the member's home. Upon the basis of such examination, the retirement system manager shall determine whether the member is still physically or mentally incapacitated for service with the city in the position held by him or her when retired for disability.
