Upon the death of a member of this plan after qualification for voluntary service retirement, or after retirement for service or because of disability, and if no allowance is payable under Section 2.124.760 of this chapter, one-half of the retirement allowance which he or she would have been entitled to if he or she had retired at the time of death, or one-half of his or her retirement allowance, as the case may be, shall be continued throughout life or until remarriage, to his or her surviving spouse.
