8-1-5: GENERAL DUTIES OF POLICE:
   A.   In General: The several members of the police department of the village, including the chief of police, shall devote their whole time and attention to the discharge of their duties, according to the provisions of this code and other ordinances, and the rules and regulations which the president and board may, from time to time, adopt and prescribe. It shall be the duty of each member of the police department of the village to preserve order, peace and quiet, and enforce the provisions of this code and other laws and ordinances, throughout the village.
   B.   Reports: The several members of the police department shall report to the chief of police all cases where buildings may be in the process of erection prior to the issuance of a permit, all cases of unlawful obstruction of streets and alleys and other public grounds, all cases of contagious diseases, all cases of unsanitary conditions, all thefts and robberies and other infractions of the provisions of this code and other laws and ordinances, and all accidents. The chief of police shall record such reports in a record to be provided for such purpose. He shall immediately report in writing to the department having control of the respective matters all such defective, unsanitary and illegal conditions, and shall make a complete and full report thereof to the president and board at the first regular meeting of said board thereafter.
   C.   Record Of Persons Arrested: It shall be the duty of the chief of police to keep a record of the names of all persons arrested or committed to the village jail or county jail in a book to be provided for such purpose. Such record shall show the date of arrest or committal, the number of days imprisoned, the amount of the fine, when and to whom paid, and the date of discharge or other disposition of such person.
   D.   Powers Relative To Service And Execution Of Warrants And Other Legal Processes: The chief of police and all policemen shall have power and authority within the village to serve and execute all warrants, writs and other processes for the apprehension and commitment of persons charged with an offense, crime or misdemeanor or held for examination or trial for the violation of any provision of this code or other law or ordinance. They shall also have power and authority within the village to serve and execute any and all writs, warrants, summons or other processes, or in assisting the same. Such policemen shall have and possess all the powers and authority conferred on constables at common law and by law.
   E.   Duty Of Arresting Officers To Appear As Witnesses: All officers making arrests shall attend as witnesses before the court where the trial may be had, and shall procure all necessary evidence in their power and furnish a list of witnesses to the court. No village officer shall be entitled to any witness fees to be taxed against the village in any action for the violation of an ordinance where the village is plaintiff.
   F.   Aid To Fire Department: It shall be the duty of the police department to aid the fire department by giving alarms in case of fire and clearing the streets or grounds in the immediate vicinity of the fire, so that the members of the fire department shall not be hindered or obstructed in the performance of their duties.
